Abstract

 

                      This thesis is of two objectives namely:-(1) to study Kāyagatāsati in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures(2) to study the development of mindfulness according the principle of Kāyagatāsati by studying the data from the Theravada Buddhist Scriptures, the Tripitaka, the Atthakathā, īkā and other connected scriptures.

                      From the study, it is found thatKāyagatāsatiis the principle of training the Mindfulness by using the temperament of both SamathaKammaṭṭhāna and Vipassanāappearing in many Suttas such as Kāyagatāsati-Sutta which deals with the development of mindfulness by considering the inbreath and the outbreath including the consideration of the 32 characteristics such as hair, feather nails, teeth, skin etc. all of which are the temperaments of Samatha in Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna-Sutta.

                      The temperament of Samatha shows the way of fixing the inbreath and the outbreath which are set up in the group of Ānāpānapabbas which are the temperaments of both Samatha and Vipassanā. It is to show the way of the development of mindfulness by fixing the consideration of the 32 characteristics as loathsome. It is set up in the group of loathsomeness. It is also set up in the group the temperaments of Samatha and Vipassanā.

                     

                      Mindfulness is the important Doctrinal Principles in developing the wisdom. That is to practise the mindfulness to cause the wisdom to arise and to know the form the norm and the Three Characteristics.   The mindfulness will arise together with the effort,   the concentration and

the wisdom all of which are called Sampayuttadhamma. There are 6 ways of developing the Mindfulness as appearing in Kāyagatāsati-Sutta, one of the patterns is Ānāpānasati, the others of 5 patterns appear in Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna-Sutta. They are 1) Postures 2)Sampajañña3)Patikūla-manasikāra, 4)Dhātumanasikāra5)Navasīvathikā.
